In a nutshell, there is no reason that ‘Veruthe Oru Bharya’ shouldn’t appeal to you, if you are approaching the film with a very realistic mind and if you know what to expect out of a Jayaram-Gopika starrer scripted by K.Gireesh Kumar and directed by Akku Akbar (Hey! Akku Akbar is the very same Akbar who was one of the directors of ‘Mazhathullikilukkam’, ‘Sadanandante Samayam’ and ‘Andavan’ and who independently directed the Hindi film ‘Gauri- the Unborn’).The film won’t be a disappointment and would most likely turn out to be a hit too, it seems.‘Veruthe Oru Bharya’ has as the lead characters a husband and a wife- Sugunan (Jayaram) and Bindu (Gopika).Sugunan is an overseer in the electricity department while Bindu is a homemaker.

They have got a daughter Anjana (Nivedhitha), who is a high-school student. For Bindu each day happens to be an endless struggle through unending household chores, for which her husband has the least of regard. While at home Sugunan always keeps ordering Bindu to do this and that and whenever she raises her voice in complaint or protest, he keeps reminding her that what she does is no work at all.Sugunan is rather indifferent towards understanding or satisfying the desires of his wife or daughter and never take them for an outing or a party. And he is sort of an idealist who cannot tolerate anyone doing any kind of power theft or the like.

This idealistic behaviour combined with his attitude of indifference creates problems in the family, which one day goes so beyond the limit that Bindu takes some drastic steps, in sheer desperation.Jayaram and Gopika have played their respective parts quite convincingly while Nivedhitha too lends able support. Those in supporting roles, including Shivaji Guruvayoor, Kalabhavan Prachod and Suraaj Venjaramoodu (as Sugunan’s colleagues), Innocent (as Bindu’s father), Madhu Warrier (as Bindu’s brother) and Sona Nair (as Sugunan’s superior at office) have done justice to their respective roles.Jaffer Idukki as the cook Kuttan is his very usual self, though he appears in very few scenes. And Rahman and Ganesh, who appear in cameos, though their very usual selves, appear a bit uncomfortable with their sermonizing kind of dialogues, which of course is needed in the film.

Shaji’s cinematography is good.Technical support from all departments is ample.Songs suit the mood and the tempo of the film. So, just forget your work and all for some time, gather your family and go watch this family flick without much of presumptions.‘Veruthe Oru Bharya’ represents the genre of films that are sort of disappearing from the menu of films dished out these days.
