Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu
Genre - Romance Directed by - Susindhran Produced by - Ananda Chakravarthi Music by - V Selvaganesh Starring - Vishnu, Saranya Mohan After a slew of action films that bordered on the farcical, here is a film based on true action, the game of Kabaddi, and a very good one at that.
‘Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu’, directed by Susindran, tells a gripping story very much reminiscent of Shimit Amin’s ‘Chak De India’ and Ashutosh Gowariker’s ‘Lagaan’.
Susindran must be applauded for coming out with a clean, tight script and credible, refreshing narration.
The story is woven around the fortunes of a village Kabaddi team, 'Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu'. Marimuthu (Vishnu), a poor boy, who has an unbelievable passion for the game, rises to become their top player. Saranya Mohan plays his love interest in the film.
Vennila , a team that can play well but cannot win, is transformed into a highly motivated unit of winners when Souda Muthu (Kishore), a renowned professional coach, takes charge. The new coach has challenges off court too, just as in ‘Chak De…’ In addition to this, they have to fight off a bunch of baddies. Finally, as is expected, all ends well and Vennila emerges victorious.
Susindran mixes rustic charm and the thrill of Kabaddi in equal measure to make a very watchable film. He has created his characters with utmost care and an attention for detail.
As the coach, Kishore is simply outstanding. A highlight of the movie is the impressive build up to the finals. On the flipside, the first half is a little too long for our taste. Though the twist in the climax has a telling impact, it is not very convincing.
Vishnu’s innocent looks and no-nonsense expressions suit the character to a ‘T’. His expertise in Kabaddi adds credibility to his role, and the whole film as well.
Other characters, including newcomers Vairavan, Nithish, Sundar, Appu Kutti, Suri and Pandi, have done roles very well.
Debutant composer V Selvaganesh (son of ‘ghatam’ exponent Vikku Vinayakaram) has done well in background score, especially during the matches. He has also given a couple of enjoyable melodies. Excellent camera work by J.Lakshman adds to the allure of the movie.
